The agreement between Trudeau and Biden on the closure of Roxham Road is news that greatly disappoints immigrants, but it will not stop them.
It has been demonstrated that the closure of Roxham Road will not immobilize immigrants. In fact, these will pass illegally or be transported to the reception gate. A Radio-Canada article mentioned that nearly 270 immigrants were arrested by Canadian authorities on Roxham Road following the declaration (“Une nuit achalandée au chemin Roxham”, Radio-Canada, Julie Roy, March 25, 2023 ). Canada and the United States have the longest border in the world, illegal immigrants will not stop to use only this path.
Canada has always been renowned as a welcoming land for immigrants. We are recognized abroad as a benevolent country. Refusing to let families come and settle with us would go against the whole idea of an egalitarian Canadian people. All people wanting to come to Canada must have the same services. There should be no difference in treatment for an immigrant whose reasons for immigrating are distinct from those of an illegal immigrant.
Following the government’s statement, it is normal for immigrants to attempt to return to Canada in safety and at greater risk. When we know that a law is going to be put in place, we take full advantage of it. The government cannot leave immigrants in the United States in exchange for the promise to accept more asylum seekers. Human lives are not exchangeable or refundable!
In short, the decision of the two North American countries only diverts the problem of illegal immigration.
