From his first participation in 2010, at the time in Class 40, to his disillusionment of 2018, we were able to discuss at length with Louis Burton to talk about the legendary Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe, which has always linked Saint-Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre.
Episode 2: memories of Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe by Louis Burton
Before 2010, I was a little Parisian kid who dreamed of regattas. It was unimaginable for me to get into ocean racing. When this crazy project started to ripen in my head, it was the dream of a lifetime that could come true. – Louis Burton
Louis Burton took part in his first Route du Rhum Destination Guadeloupe in 2010. He competed with his Class 40, the oldest in the fleet. For those who lived in the Paris region at the time, where they came from, this race will be the first single-handed transatlantic. “It was far from being won at the start, explains the skipper. I didn’t even know how to register! The site said “registration by invitation” and I don’t see why I would have been invited back then. In reality, it’s just a way of putting some distance.”
He will finish 20th of the 45 Class 40 entered that year, after hitting a fishing boat off the Azores. Also discover in this podcast his happy memories of 2014, as well as the disillusion experienced in 2018, with a retirement early in the race.
