Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie | A green alley turned brown

Piles of garbage bags have lined a green alley in the borough of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie for more than two weeks. Garbage attracts squirrels, raccoons and worms, in addition to stinking up the alley, which makes the place unsanitary, deplore several residents.

The alley between rue Saint-Hubert and avenue De Châteaubriand, between Rosemont and Bellechasse, has been unrecognizable since June 29. Since that date, the garbage bags, left on the west side of the artery, have not been picked up by the garbage collectors. On the east side, five meters further on, everything is collected in due form.

Diane, who lives on Avenue De Châteaubriand, contacted the borough several times to find out why her garbage bags were no longer being picked up. “I’ve been here for 34 years and I’ve never had this problem. If there is a rule, they have been applying it for three weeks, ”she told us, Friday noon.

The lady filed several requests with the borough, including one for unsanitary conditions. But without success.

“I didn’t retire to manage garbage cans! “, she launched, visibly annoyed.

For Tifenn, a resident of Saint-Hubert Street, the presence of litter is a safety issue. “Yesterday, with the tornado warning, we were afraid that the bags and the debris would fly away and cause damage,” she explains.

Communication failing

According to Denise Truchy, resident of avenue De Châteaubriand, the 311 Service Center and the office of François Limoges, borough mayor, have been passing the buck since June 29.

“Thursday, I ran after the garbage collector for answers and he said to me: ‘Call 311 ostie!’ It’s an endless circle! “, she says, desperate.

Denise finally received an answer on Friday. By e-mail, she was informed that under the collection service by-law, the borough has asked the company Derichebourg, which handles collection in the area, to stop picking up waste from the west side of the lane between rue Saint-Hubert and avenue De Châteaubriand, from rue Rosemont to rue Jean-Talon, starting June 29.

Residents must now place their garbage on the sidewalk of avenue De Châteaubriand. The problem: they were never informed by the borough. For three collections, they left their garbage in the alley, which piled up, week after week.

“It’s hell!” exclaimed Martine St-Jules, who has lived in the neighborhood for 34 years. We don’t mind if we have to put our waste in front of our houses, but let them tell us! »

Friday midday, The Press contacted the Borough of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie to obtain answers to residents’ questions. A few hours later, at the end of the afternoon, a communications manager told us that a team would be on site to pick up the garbage that evening. This reversal of the situation occurred after several complaints from citizens of the sector, which had remained unanswered for two weeks.

In this same email, the borough added that residences located on De Chateaubriand Avenue must deposit their household waste “at the curb on the avenue and not in the alley”.
