Rosalía, Lil Nas X, Kygo… an eclectic second day filled with emotions

The tears of Rosalía, the crazy energy of Lil Nas X or the show of Kygo marked this second day of the Lollapalooza festival, which is held at the Hippodrome de Longchamp in Paris until this Sunday evening. Franceinfo culture was there.

Under the Paris sun, many festival-goers came to applaud their favorite artists on the second day of the 5th edition of Lollapalooza, this Saturday evening. This traveling festival, which has taken place every year in Chicago for the past twenty years, has been exported all over the world, including Paris since 2017. It brings together all cultures and styles. Once again, there was something for everyone: rock, pop, flamenco, rap, electro.

In a warm and good-natured atmosphere, the Hippodrome de Longchamp has been transformed into an American desert, despite the towers of La Défense in the background. Filled glasses, glitter on their eyes, sneakers or boots on their feet, festival-goers had everything to have a good day (and evening). The artists – Doya, Only The Poets, Kaleo, Lil Nas X, Rosalía, Kygo – lived up to all expectations, between emotions and great energy. Reporting.

Doya: fraternal flamenco

4 p.m., the Lollapalooza is on Spanish time with Doya, the group of two sisters born in France but originally from the Iberian Peninsula. From an early age, Marina and Mélissa were immersed in flamenco. They then learn to play the violin, saxophone, percussion and train at the conservatory. Spending a major part of their time in Andalusia, they naturally oriented themselves towards flamenco and learned singing, guitar and the cajón, a traditional Peruvian sound box. In 2018, they created their duo which mixes traditional flamenco music, pop, electro and Latin sounds.

On the small stage of the Alternative Stage, the two sisters sang of their love for Spain. For day one aficionados, the moment was magical: “we have the two countries in the heart [l’Espagne et la France]we couldn’t choose, so we made a song in Spanish and French about love” : this is how the two sisters introduced their title which will surely appear on their first EP very soon. Their first single No Anda Sola, released a few months ago, was also the last track before the goodbye.

Only The Poets: English rock that capsizes hearts

5:15 p.m. On the same stage, it’s another universe: that of the English group Only The Poets. The tone was already set during the soundcheck a few minutes before the start of the concert, the fans in the front row shouting the name of Tommy, Jarred, Marcus or even Andy. The indie-rock quartet, based between Reading and London, transformed the mostly female audience into a frenzied crowd for 45 minutes singing the lyrics to each track by heart.

The devastating pop rock and mad energy of the four artists seduced his fans and the curious who came to discover the group. Tommy, the singer, had unsheathed his most beautiful dark glasses facing the Parisian sun. But after a few pieces and a few drops of sweat, he decided to take them off to the delight of his admirers who, for the most part, were rushing to their smartphones to film the concert. Highlight: When the band asked the audience to sit down during the song Jump and the crowd suddenly started jumping. This beautiful moment moved the group a lot: “You are incredible”. The English quartet which made the first parts of Louis Tomlinson, a former member of the One Direction group, will return to France, for sure.

Kaleo: bewitching Icelandic folk

5:45 p.m. More and more festival-goers were crowding around the two main stages to be ready to follow the next concerts of the American Lil Nas X or the Spanish Rosalia. But before it was time for Kaleo, an Icelandic folk / rock group, born in 2012. This is not the first time that its five members have performed at Lollapalloza, they came during the 2018 edition.

Dressed like an American Wild West cowboy with his hat, striped t-shirt, ripped jeans and ankle boots, the singer Jökull Júlíusson bewitched the thousands of spectators who swayed their bodies to the rhythm of the music. When the song Way Down We Go, which has accumulated more than 500 million views on Youtube, resounded in the grounds of the Hippodrome de Longchamp, the public began to sing at the top of their voices and let themselves be carried away by the melody. A moment out of time and a captivating performance.

Lil Nas X: spectacular American rap

8:30 p.m. For the last date of his European tour, the American rapper Lil Nas X impressed the French public with a breathtaking scenography, sublime costumes and sets and an atmosphere worthy of the greatest American shows.

At only 24 years old, he gave a performance full of energy that delighted his fans who had been waiting for him for many hours in front of the stage. The rapper in fur and gladiator armorsurrounded by his dancers, chained his biggest hits like Old Town Road in a Wild West setting and his queer manifesto Montero. In a second part, he adorned himself with blue and in the introduction of his song Industry Babythe legendary sound of beat it from Michael Jackson to sounded. A real show that should not be missed!

Rosalía: sensual Latin pop

9:30 p.m. Rosalía, the Spanish phenom turned up the heat when she appeared on the big stage wearing a black outfit and motorcycle helmet. The energy she exuded with her dancers was impressive and set the tone for the evening. Her sensuality and her staring games with the camera terrified her fans. Very close to his audience during his show, the 30-year-old artist created an explosive atmosphere. She completely set the stage on fire with her flamenco-inspired choreographies and her greatest hits: La Fama, Despecha, Con Altura, Malamente, LLYLM.

Before a piano session, the singer confided in a hesitant but almost perfect French: “Thank you for making my dream come true, thank you France. You have always received my music with so much love. You have always had a place in your heart for my music. I am the happiest in the world to have you”. A confidence that makes sense because this concert marked the end of his world tour Motomami. Following this sequence, Rosalía, moved to tears, struggled to come to her senses and sing. But she quickly offered her magnificent vocal power one last time to the public. There Spanish singer definitely overshadows the biggest stars such as Beyoncé and Rihanna. There “Queen R” never ceases to surprise us.

Kygo: the electro that makes the show

10:45 p.m. The Norwegian DJ electrified the audience with a grand finale. Kygo’s electro was perfect to end this second day of the festival. The Hippodrome de Longchamp has been transformed into a giant nightclub with its light shows.

Between the remixes of the biggest DJs like Daft Punk and Avicii and his own hits like Stargizing and his duet with Selena Gomez It Ain’t Me, Kygo lit up (literally and figuratively) the stage during his set. He even invited singer Zoe Wees to perform their title Love Me Now. A grand finale with magnificent fireworks. See you this Sunday evening for the final bouquet of the 5th edition of Lollapalooza…
