(Montreal) Candu Energy has landed a roughly $64 million contract in Romania that will see it provide design and engineering services for Unit 1 of a nuclear reactor, its parent company SCN-Lavalin announced Thursday.

The contract obtained from Nuclearelectrica SA, operator of Romania’s Cernavoda nuclear power plant, should last two and a half years, the engineering firm said in a press release.
This is the first step in a project to extend the reactor’s useful life to 2060, the company added.
Candu Reactor Unit 1 alone supplies 10% of Romania’s electricity, ensuring an emissions-free, safe and uninterrupted flow of electricity, according to SNC. Its refurbishment aims to support energy security and carbon neutrality goals, she argued.
The contract announced Thursday is for the provision of engineering and initial procurement services for retubing work to replace key components of the reactor core, including fuel channels, pressure tubes and feeders for unit 1 of Cernavoda.
Candu Energy had already obtained a contract in May to carry out work to optimize the performance of unit 1 of the Cernavoda power station, for an unspecified amount.
