Only five years after offering his first album (the smash hit Dogrel), the Irish quintet Fontaines DC has become a sure bet on the rock scene, the refined lyrics of the charismatic singer Grian Chatten finding their raw, often gloomy sound (particularly in Skinty Fia2022) and rhythmic of his colleagues the right way to evoke the disillusionment of our times. However, with its fourth album, Fontaines DC has chosen to step out of its post-punk comfort zone by seeking inspiration first from The Cure, then more vaguely from Depêche Mode, but especially from American alternative rock and Britpop, for the rock materials of the new songs — acoustic guitars impose themselves in an unusual way in the sound colors of the group, which offers here the least noisy and therefore the most accessible of its albums, produced by James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco). The astonishing new aesthetic posture succeeds for the group, in particular because it underlines the melodic force of its compositions.
