Roman Polanski is on trial for defamation after calling accusations of sexual assault made against him by British actress Charlotte Lewis a “heinous lie”.

The 90-year-old Franco-Polish director Roman Polanski described “abhorrent lie” Charlotte Lewis’ accusations. In May 2010, in the middle of the Cannes Film Festival, the actress, who played the main female role in her film Piratereleased in 1986, had accused Roman Polanski of having “sexually assaulted” at his home in Paris in 1983, when she was only 16 years old. The director’s lawyers dispute the allegations against their client, Roman Polanski.

Many accusations

Roman Polanski, who won numerous awards, including a Palme d’Or and the Academy Award for Best Director for his film The pianist, was accused of sexual assault and rape by around ten women over the course of his career; accusations for all prescribed facts, which he always contested, and which did not prevent him from working. As part of his defamation trial, the filmmaker announced that he would not be present.
