Roland Motte, gardener: sage officinalis

Sage has many health and cooking benefits. Carefully follow the advice of Roland Motte, our gardener, for cultivating sage officinalis.

Sage officinalis is an aromatic that you can consume in herbal tea, excellent for digestion. Roland Motte, the gardener of France Bleu Sud Lorraine and France Bleu Besançon, reveals all the secrets of sage officinalis.

Who has sage in his garden, does not need the doctor!

This plant, since Antiquity, is essential in the gardens. Sage opens the appetite. It regulates digestion. It seems that an infusion of sage will make it possible to pass a too copious meal. A lot is said about the benefits of sage.

It is also an easy aromatic for home gardeners. In pots or in the ground, sage thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. The sage genus includes about 900 species of annual perennials and biennials.

They are distributed all over the world and in this video, we are going to talk about sage officinalis. It is a semi-shrubby perennial and its leaves are slightly bluish and a little hairy. It is quite powerful and requires very little care. No watering, except the first year of planting. If it takes too much volume, cut it back at the end of winter and when it is older, it will also have to be pruned, because over time, branches can dry out just during the winter.

Harvest sage, fresh or dried!

In general, sage leaves are harvested earlier in the morning depending on your needs. It is best to use fresh leaves. The leaves can be eaten fresh, but they can also be dried. For this, we install the leaves on a newspaper in a ventilated room and you can dry them without exposing them to the sun. After three or four weeks, you can store them in an airtight jar.

Sage, easy to take cuttings!

To multiply sage, you can make cuttings, it’s very easy. In the spring, we will cut the end of a stem without flowers to about ten centimeters. We will remove the leaves on the bottom half of the stem. Then push the stalk halfway into a mixture of soil and sand, or into seed compost. And then, we will place the cuttings in a place sheltered from the wind and light, while watering regularly and in the fall, you transplant the pot where you want it. So it works in the ground, but it also works in pots.
