Roland-Garros | Victorious entry for Naomi Osaka

(Paris) Naomi Osaka started Roland-Garros with a 1-6, 6-4 and 7-5 victory against Lucia Bronzetti on Sunday.


This is a seventh appearance in Paris for Osaka, winner of four major tournaments.

“At times I played well, but I was quite nervous,” conceded Osaka, 134e in the world.

Ranked 48eBronzetti remains in search of a first victory at Roland-Garros, in three appearances at the event.

In her previous match in the quarterfinals of the Moroccan Open, the previous week, she led 5-0 in the third set, against Peyton Stearns, before suffering the defeat.

Dayan Yastremska beat Ajla Tomljanovic 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Bored in the back, Lesia Tsurenko withdrew after less than a set against Donna Vekic.

Sixth seed Andrey Rublev defeated Taro Daniel 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-5.

Lying 49e at the ATP, Lorenzo Sonego surprised the 17the seeded Ugo Humbert 4-6, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6.

Humbert was the highest ranked Frenchman at the tournament.

Two-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz is also on the daytime schedule.

22-year-old Montrealer Gabriel Diallo, a qualifier, will play against Kei Nishikori.

The 34-year-old Japanese has 12 career titles. He made it to the New York final in 2014, losing to Marin Cilic.

In the evening, Andy Murray will face Stan Wawrinka. Each has three prestigious trophies to their name.
