Roland Garros | Leylah Fernandez in the doubles final

Canadian Leylah Fernandez and her American partner Taylor Townsend qualified for the French Open women’s doubles final on Friday.

Fernandez and Townsend, 10e seed of the Grand Slam tournament on clay, defeated the American duo of Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff, 2e seeded, in two sets of 6-0 and 6-4.

Fernandez, of Laval, Que., has struggled in singles action this year. She is 14-13 this season after losing her second-round singles match to Clara Tauson.

However, she and Townsend have enjoyed doubles success since joining forces in March, advancing to the final in Miami, where they lost to Pegula and Gauff, and the semi-final in Madrid.

The pair will face Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan and Wang Xinyu of China in the final.

This will be Fernandez’s first appearance in a Grand Slam final since reaching the women’s singles final at the US Open in 2021.
