Rodrigo Sorogoyen, director of the acclaimed “As Bestas”, will chair the 63rd Critics’ Week

The Spanish director of “Stockholm”, “The Realm” and “Madre” won the prize for best original screenplay in 2016 at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

It’s official: Rodrigo Sorogoyen will be president of the jury for the 63rd Critics’ Week. This parallel section of the Cannes festival is dedicated to first and second films. It will be held in Cannes from May 15 to 23, 2024.

His latest film, As Bestas, released in 2022 in the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival in the non-competitive Cannes Première section, is for many critics and journalists one of the best films in the Cannes selection of the year 2022. It also won nine trophies during the Goyas ceremony, Spanish equivalent of the Oscars.

“A big responsibility”

In a video published by Hello Cinema Friday March 5, the director declared that presiding over Critics’ Week represents “a big responsibility“and emphasizes that she supports”in an important way, cinema and new ways of telling stories.

Created in 1962 by an association of French film critics, Critics’ Week is the oldest “unofficial” part of the Cannes Film Festival. This section allowed us to discover some of the biggest names in independent and auteur cinema, from Ken Loach to Alejandro González Iñárritu, including Andrea Arnold and Justine Triet.
