Rock with one of the emblematic groups of the British revival: the Irishmen from Fontaines DC are releasing their fourth album on Friday August 23, Romancewith a very different aesthetic from the post-punk spirit of the acclaimed previous ones. And it is a success, which propels them even higher.

Who would have believed, a few years ago, that the revival of Anglo-Saxon rock would come from Ireland, from Dublin to be precise, Dublin City which gives its final initials to Fontaines DC. In any case, not many people would have sworn that these five young men would travel to festivals to convert ever more fans.

Already four albums under his belt, the last one, Romancemaking a spectacular turn when the previous one, Skinty Fiahad grabbed the coveted number one spot in the UK charts. Fontaines DC changed a lot of things, starting with the look: a glam-rock inspiration, lots of colour in the hair, and the desire to take more romantic paths.

Certainly, the post-rock formula that made it a serious object of curiosity across Europe still shines through in some pieces.

But the Irish assume a more romantic side, they are so fond of poetry, they who wrote this album in the four corners of the continent, abandoning for once their beloved Dublin. The voice of their singer, Grian Chatten, author of a very beautiful solo album very recently, still does a lot.

It’s always exciting to see a band change horizons, when the easy way would be to constantly grind down the same recipes. Fontaines DC is indeed an exciting band, very generational in its romantic melancholy – they don’t hesitate to quote Lana Del Rey – and are on the way to becoming a huge machine.
