Director Robert Guédiguian in Toulouse (France 3)

Marseille director Robert Guédiguian came to present his latest film in arthouse cinemas in Toulouse. “And the party continues” is a choral film, with different ages and social backgrounds which promotes the strength of the collective. The opportunity for the filmmaker to find his favorite actresses and actors like Ariane Ascaride, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Gérard Meylan or Robinson Stévenin.

Robert Guédiguian’s 18th feature film covers many subjects. It opens with a dramatic event in Marseille: the tragedy of rue d’Aubagne. “And the party continues” is also dedicated to the inhabitants of this district. But in this new opus, the stories of all the protagonists end well. Because this time, Robert Guédiguian wrote this scenario with a single objective: to be light while addressing the societal themes that are dear to him such as poor housing, hospitals, exiles. This film is not an observation of everything that is wrong today. It’s a film that hazards a few suggestions to make things better” explains the director.

The Toulouse public is there

Robert Guédiguian, who is the former president of the Toulouse cinema library, would also be one of the favorite directors of Toulouse residents. The Marseille filmmaker who deeply believes that popular cinema and auteur cinema are not opposed, is very attached to the pink city.Toulouse is the city in the world where my films work best. It’s a city that works extremely well from an art house cinema perspective.i” he adds. It is therefore the ABC cinema which welcomed it for this preview screening before the film’s release on November 15.

A film on the theme of commitment

This new film, inspired by political journey of Michèle Rubirola elected mayor of Marseille in 2020 and resigned five months later, says the story of Rosa. This Marseillaise figure, played by Ariane Ascaride, devoted her life to her family and to politics with the same sense of sacrifice. While she could be the only one who can seal the union of the left on the eve of an electoral deadline, she falls in love with Henri. For the first time, Rosa is afraid to commit. Between the pressure from his political family and his desire to let go, the dilemma is heavy to bear.

At the end of the screening, the public’s opinions were divided. “I wasn’t immediately drawn into the film but as the characters released themselves, I was touched by their commitment” says a spectator. “Magnificent, I wonder who else can convey so much humanity” exclaims another.
