Road safety in Quebec | A national operation carried out this Wednesday

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) announced that it would carry out a national road safety operation this Wednesday across the entire territory patrolled by its police officers and those of 28 municipal police forces.

The operation deployed with several partners included interventions to counter multiple problematic behaviors of motorists, including reckless driving, speeding, driving impaired by alcohol, drugs or fatigue, as well as distracted driving. .

Police reported that in more than 21 percent of fatal crashes, one or more occupants were not wearing a seat belt. This negligence was also to be targeted in Wednesday’s operation.

The Sûreté du Québec added that the operation should also identify road vehicles with non-compliant equipment.

In addition, compliance with certain courtesy rules that could constitute an offense had to be verified on Wednesday by the police, in particular access for disabled people to parking spaces designated for them.

This operation is part of a transportation network safety strategy which aims to reduce the number of fatal collisions and collisions with serious injuries in Quebec.

The Sûreté du Québec recalled that an operation of this scale was carried out last year, on June 20.
