The online distribution platform Amazon, which very rarely shares its audience figures, indicated Monday that the broadcast of the film Road House had attracted up to 50 million views since its launch on March 21.
The action film popularized in 1989 by Patrick Swayze in the role of a former UFC mixed martial arts fighter hired as a bouncer in a bar in the Keys, Florida, is here taken up by Jake Gyllenhaal, in this remake which sets a record for Amazon MGM Studios.
The film landed directly on the small screen – without going to cinemas – which provoked the ire of director Doug Liman. The film’s producer, Joel Silver, also fell out with Amazon management from the start of the project, according to the Hollywood Reporter without giving any further explanation.
It’s unclear how Amazon arrived at the 50 million figure – whether it takes into account users’ viewing time (is a view counted if someone only watches a minute of the film ?) and even if they are unique users – but this is the figure that was revealed by the multinational.
