Road collapsed and cars swept away in Chertsey: one person missing

Two vehicles were submerged late Friday evening in Chertsey, in Lanaudière, after the collapse of a road near a bridge.

Emergency services were called to this effect around 10:30 p.m. to Avenue Castor.

According to the Municipality, part of the roadway on Avenue Castor collapsed north of the Gour Creek bridge, under the pressure of the water, swollen by the torrential rains.

The two occupants of one of the vehicles managed to escape and are out of danger. The driver of the other car, a resident of Montreal, is missing and actively sought.

“We ask the population to collaborate by avoiding going on site, which could greatly hamper operations,” the Municipality indicated on social networks Friday evening.

In addition, around fifty citizens are isolated due to the collapsed road.

“We are aware that several residences are isolated due to the collapse of the road, and rest assured that we are doing everything we can to organize the necessary relief,” she added.

Residents of the area in this situation are asked to contact 450 882-2920 to provide their contact details to the Municipality in order to facilitate rescue operations.
