RN “will censor any government” including ministers from LFI or the Ecologists, says Marine Le Pen

Marine Le Pen is trying to clarify her party’s position regarding a possible New Popular Front government. The leader of the National Rally MPs promised on Thursday 11 July that her party “will censor any government” including ministers from La France Insoumise or the Ecologists-EELV. “There is one thing that is certain: the RN group will censor any government where LFI and environmentalists have ministerial responsibilities,” she claimed on X.

This position comes at a time when the group’s secretary general Renaud Labaye had cast doubt on the party’s intentions. He had in fact indicated that the RN “will not censor[it] not” a potential left-wing government if it proposed “consensual measures”nearby Figaro. “Everything will depend on the government, the general policy speech or the texts presented,” he also commented to AFP.

Before specifying a few moments later, “that in the event of a government including a minister from La France Insoumise”the chances for the RN to approve its general policy speech would be “almost zero”, suggesting support for a possible motion of censure in this scenario.

Jordan Bardella, for his part, seems to be closing the door to any government from the NFP, even in the absence of ministers from LFI or the Ecologists-EELV. “Le RN would immediately censor a minority NFP government, whose economic, agricultural and migration measures would plunge the country into chaos”he said in the evening on X.

Asked on LCI about Renaud Labaye’s comments, LFI coordinator Manuel Bompard argued that he “be wary[ait] “still announcements from the National Rally”. “I know that sometimes there can be tactics, bluffing”he added. Having come out on top, the left has been working for several days to propose a government team, even though Emmanuel Macron has assured that “nobody took it away” in the legislative elections, due to the absence of a clear majority in the Assembly. However, a potential motion of censure not supported by the votes of the RN could allow an NFP government to remain.
