For a few days, some pharmacies have run out of Misoprostol, a pill used in cases of medical abortion. This shortage hinders access to abortion for some associations.
In this pharmacy in downtown Amiens (Somme), there are only ten boxes of abortion pills left, an order already reserved by a liberal doctor. But when the pharmacist checks the available stocks, there is panic, one of the pills is indeed in short supply, the other is not. “It’s ok, but when both are out of stock, you can’t get the product”explains Jean-Paul Landrieu, pharmacist.
A drug used in 76% of cases
In France, Misoprostol is involved in 76% of abortions. In the city, the CHU performs abortions in its sexual health center and some midwives and liberal doctors in their offices. Doctor Niel performs around sixty medical abortions a year, and often has to deal with ruptures. A problem that can “leaving women in a complicated situation”, according to her. This drug is produced by a single laboratory with American capital which is encountering difficulties in its production line.
