British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is traveling to Israel and several other capitals in the region on Thursday to call for avoiding an escalation of the war between Hamas and the Jewish state, his services announced Wednesday evening.

Rishi Sunak must emphasize during this two-day tour that the international community must “not let Hamas’ barbaric terrorism and its disregard for human life become the catalyst for an escalation of conflict in the region”, according to a press release from Downing Street.

Expected early Thursday morning in Israel, Rishi Sunak is due to meet his counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

He must also insist that humanitarian aid, of which London recently announced an increase for the Palestinians, can arrive while Israel has authorized the entry of aid into Gaza from Egypt, and that the Britons stuck in Gaza can leave.

Alongside the trip by the head of the British government, his Foreign Minister James Cleverly is due to visit Egypt, Turkey and Qatar “in the coming days”, according to Downing Street.

London assured its support for Israel after the bloody Hamas attacks which left more than 1,400 dead, and announced the increase in humanitarian aid from the United Kingdom to the Palestinians by a third, or ten million pounds sterling (11 .5 million euros) additional.

In retaliation for these attacks, the deadliest that have targeted Israel since its creation in 1948, the Jewish state is relentlessly bombing the small, overpopulated territory of Gaza, where nearly 3,500 people have been killed, the majority of them Palestinian civilians, according to the local authorities.
