“The Labour Party won this general election”conceded Rishi Sunak. “The British have delivered a clear verdict this evening (…) and I take responsibility” of this defeat, he added, Friday July 5, after being re-elected in his constituency of Richmond, in the north of England.
While the Conservatives’ defeat had been predicted for months by the polls, their rout is proving to be historic. According to the latest projections by British television, the Labour Party would win 410 seats out of the 650 in the House of Commons, just a little less than Tony Blair’s historic score in 1997. At the time, Labour won 418 seats in the Westminster Parliament.
