Rise of the Beasts” in 4DX, it’s no longer cinema but a bumper car ride

Immersive cinema is not new, the 4DX formula proposed for certain blockbusters is the latest generation, we tested it with “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”: fasten your seatbelts.

Very early on, films sought to leave the screen to better grab the viewer. The fairground origins of the distribution of films at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries made them attractions. Their new avatar can be found today in the latest in immersive cinema, the 4DX. We tested it on the occasion of the release of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, in theaters since June 7. Hat’s Off.

The “Maximums”

Boom, boom, tchak, tchak, bing, and a little kick in the shoulder blades while the seat shakes you in all directions, while a wind tunnel caresses your neck and vines your calves, until a hot flash takes you during an explosion… This is approximately the effect that causes this seventh transformers thrown and waved in 4DX, sprinkled with wind, cold and raindrops. It’s no longer a press screening, but a war report, minus the risk… A real merry-go-round.

The tremors are harsh. Think you get kicked in the ribs with every door slam, imagine when it’s a metal gorilla rolling around. Because transformers, they are giant extraterrestrial robots that take the form of all possible and imaginable vehicles to hide themselves (motorcycles, cars, trucks, trains, tanks…), but also – the novelty of the film -, that of animals. These are the “Maximals”. Eternal in conflict with the Decepticons who eradicated them, the Transformers search for the cosmic key that would allow them to leave Earth to rebuild their world. So as it moves a lot, with big sound, it moves.

Crumpled sheets

Franchise transformers in the cinema got off to a good start with Michael Bay’s first opus in 2007, full of humor and revolutionary special effects, in which Shia LeBeouf played. A “nag” cinema but which did not play it. But Rise of the Beasts takes itself seriously, on a manichean intrigue, like a vast animated film of SF for teenagers. After the success of the first film, the franchise proved uneven. Previous, The Last Knight (Michael Bay, 2017), had the charm of being linked to the Knights of the Round Table.

Seen in 4DX, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts no longer comes from the cinema but from the carnival. The French version with Ophélie Winter, Dorothée and Mister V (under his actor name Yvick Letexie) caused a stir. They have merit in managing to exist in this thunderous rustling of sheet metal. No doubt that on a screen of twenty meters in base and in its Atmos, that would be enough. Though…
