The number of new coronavirus infections rose last week in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe, but the number of deaths globally fell by 16%, according to the latest data from the ‘World Health Organization.
The WHO reports 3.3 million new cases of COVID-19 last week, a decline of 4%, with more than 7,500 deaths. But the number of cases jumped 45% in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and about 6% in Europe.
Southeast Asia is the only region where there has been an increase in the number of deaths, of 4%.
Globally, the number of new infections has been slipping since January’s peak.
British public health officials warned last week that the country could be at the very start of a new wave fueled by Omicron variants, even though hospitalization rates remain “very low”.
The country abandoned virtually all of its health measures several months ago.
