Violence in New Caledonia: Bruno Retailleau calls for a “state of emergency”

Several deaths, during a new night of violence in New Caledonia and hundreds of injured have been deplored in the archipelago since the start of the violence on Monday, sparked by the reform of the electoral body voted by the National Assembly, but rejected by the separatists.

“I call on the State to seize the tools of authority which make it possible to restore public order”declares Bruno Retailleau, president of the LR group in the Senate.

Republican leaders have requested that the Council of Ministers establish a state of emergency in New Caledonia to put an end to the riots. “There can be no dialogue in the bitch.” for the president of the LR group in the Senate. He supports Emmanuel Macron’s decision not to convene a Congress immediately after the vote on the constitutional revision in the National Assembly and to invite representatives of pro-independence and non-independence political forces to Paris.

Fatal attack on a prison van: the State is “overwhelmed, no longer even able to protect its civil servants” denounces Bruno Retailleau

On Tuesday, two prison officers were killed and three others injured, with one of them still facing a life-threatening condition, during an attack on their van at the Incarville tollbooth in Eure by several armed criminals.

A detainee present in the van, who was returning to the Evreux remand center where he was incarcerated after a hearing at the Rouen judicial court, escaped and his accomplices fled. The fugitive detainee, Mohamed Amra, 30, has already been convicted 13 times but none for drug offenses. The search for the detainee and his accomplices continues. In the Eure department, more than 450 police officers and gendarmes were mobilized. The prison union will be received by the Minister of Justice. In particular, they demand “the drastic reduction of extractions by promoting the use of videoconferencing by magistrates or their travel to establishments”, “an overhaul and harmonization of escort levels”.
“The State has lost control and is no longer even able to protect its civil servants”denounces Bruno Retailleau, president of the LR group in the Senate.

“The means are lacking”, especially in prisons, he believes. We need “of course, more prison places”.

Merger of public broadcasting in 2026: “Savings are not a dirty word”, says Bruno Retailleau

The deputies approved in committee Tuesday evening the merger of the public broadcasting media on January 1, 2026. An additional step towards the realization of the executive’s project.

“If we have to make savings to be more efficient, that’s not a bad word,” insists the leader of the LR senators. A speech which contrasts with that of Renaissance MP Quentin Bataillon, who was rapporteur for the information mission on the future of public broadcasting. “The ambition of the President of the Republic, the Minister of Culture and the parliamentary majority is not savings”he assures.

For Bruno Retailleau, France Télévisions, Radio France and France Médias Monde must also tighten their belts. “I don’t see why the audiovisual sector in France wouldn’t do like the French, at a time when we have 3.100 billion in debt”adds the senator from Vendée. “If there is a need [de suppressions de postes] to be effective, why not”he says.

Bruno Retailleau is “favorable to there being a single management of public broadcasting”, a question of “consistency”for him. “Within this group, which would be merged”, he imagines “a certain number of entities more specialized in this or that public”. “I don’t see how that can call into question the quality” programs, launches the president of the LR group in the Senate.
