Review of Soif, de L’Isle | Sensual electro-pop

Under the artist name of L’Isle, Ariane Brunet offers an electro-pop of excellent craftsmanship and high sensual content.

Ariane Brunet made a name for herself with three albums released between 2010 and 2016. But it’s as L’Isle that she’s making a comeback this spring, after releasing a few songs under that name in recent years.

Thirsty is a beautifully crafted electro-pop album, for which the singer-songwriter is frankly well surrounded. DMRS, Samito, Félix Petit, Philippe Brault, Jonathan Dauphinais, Vendou, Steeven Chouinard (Le Couleur) are just some of the collaborators who have been in the studio, who have played, sung or co-directed with her, giving a powerful groove background to this 13-piece album — 10 songs, 3 musical interludes.

With titles like Bitter love, Rest, Our garden, Vanilla Or Nothing promisedit’s also a very sensual, even carnal album, which talks a lot about love in all its forms, about satisfied or unfulfilled desires, disordered couple relationships, feminine affirmation, forbidden attractions…

Through this anthology of trance and escape songs, there are a few surprises, such as Fire(s)a touching piano-voice piece, and Nirvanawhich describes with great empathy the harsh daily life of a prostitute in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district.

One can reproach L’Isle for sometimes clumsy poetry, but there is in Thirsty a vital energy so enthralling that it is difficult to resist. And songs like azure, Vanilla And The result will undoubtedly be part of the soundtrack of our summer evenings.
