Review of Portrait robot, Souldia and Lost | Brutal Combo

Quebec rappers Souldia and Lost join forces on 10 songs that offer lucid reflections on their dark past and their acquired success.

Both Souldia and Lost have already guested on their respective solo albums. However, a collaborative project was not obvious.

The first has a skin-deep style and does not hesitate to display his emotions and vulnerability. The other is also capable of introspective texts, but does not reveal himself as easily. After a few songs, we notice that what distinguishes them reinforces each theme addressed.

On Yesterday again, which does not evoke the same kind of nostalgia as Charles Aznavour, the two MCs confide that they no longer recognize the street where they forged their shell. Their words are similar, but their different perspectives paint a richer picture. Bus shelter, the next one, is in the same vein. “It’s been a long time since I knew if I’m bad or good, yeah/And that’s where I come from,” Lost sings on the chorus.

No matter the subject, Souldia and Lost deliver their rhymes with a gravity that becomes exhausting after a while. Let them reveal what they like and don’t like (Goodfellaz) or express themselves on the difficulty of being both an artist and a father (Owl) as well as the passage of time (Leave me), the intensity remains in the carpet.

The production, to match, relies on heavy piano notes and trap rhythms, sometimes alternative drill (the powerful Pressure). The duo Gen1us (Farfadet and Christophe Martin), Toosick and TWT have certainly concocted beautiful melodies and impressive flights, the whole is often busy.

After nine songs, the force of the words delivered by the duo of rappers combined with beats overwhelming simulates the boxer defeating his opponent. And the adversary is our ears. Then, just as we’re about to collapse, the soulful plot of Cohiba allows you to raise your head and appreciate a respite that you no longer expected. The recognition expressed by Souldia and Lost is also nice to hear. “They judged me, they took me for an illiterate/We remember it during a sold-out album launch. » Indeed, Souldia, there is something to be proud of.
