Review of Nimrod, Obia the Chief and Cotola | Caustic humor, sinister atmosphere

Rapper Obia le Chef and producer Cotola team up again more than 10 years after the release of the albums The process And The theoremwho launched them.

The title, Nimrod, refers to a biblical character. Noah’s grandson and first king after the Flood, he reigned over cities in Babylonia. Nimrod is also a hunter and a rebel.

Here, exit the filtered voice, the trap rhythms, the catchy choruses and the introspective lyrics of the albums and EP previous ones which were aimed at a wider audience. Obia and Cotola offer a work in the purest tradition of competitive boom bap. “I’m on my grizzly bear, no Cuddly Bears,” declaimed on Businesssums up the state of mind well.

The Chef begins this same piece with: “I have the sauce, Bombay Mahal/There’s a good wind in the street, I hear the gusts/The transport is bulletproof, I feel very papal. » These few rhymes contain at the same time the references to Quebec culture, the street stories and the assumed vanity heard throughout the album. The whole thing is coated in a scathing humor, not for everyone, but very well put together. “On my ex, I got files, David Duchovny/She jumps to conclusions, you gotta call it bungee,” Obia raps on The customers you haveto which Wanted adds a verse.

In the same vein, on Pure wool, which benefits from a powerful chorus from Sabrina Sabotage, the MC exhausts almost all the metaphors to talk about cocaine. There is more than one way to demonstrate the richness of the French language.

Obia’s nonchalant cadence is reminiscent of that of Californian Larry June. His ad-libs – words or onomatopoeia often repeated between sentences – too. This comparison, as far as we are concerned, is very flattering.

THE beats by Cotola are tinged with synth-rock and prog, especially at the end: Reasonable doubtwith the Frenchman Bob Marlich, Sorrel of the Freemasonswith Rowjay, and Moonwalkwhich evokes the detective films of the 1980s. Moreover, the brilliant cohesion of Nimrod is reinforced by various cinematographic extracts.

On the divine Good God sees, Obia asks: “I am an OG Where is my Félix?, aka Aliassime”. His chances of winning a trophy at the ADISQ Gala are low for several reasons, but fans of uncompromising rap will certainly grant him the honor of listening Nimrod endlessly.

Obia le Chef will accompany Fléau Dicaprio as the opening act for Lary Kidd at the Foufounes Électriques, on June 13 and 14, as part of the Francos de Montréal. The launch of vinyl Nimrod will take place on July 20, at 2 p.m., at 180g. Obia will offer a performance for the occasion.
