Review of KaytrAminé | Summer essential

The meeting between Montrealer Kaytranada and Portland rapper Aminé gives birth to a summer project with prestigious guests and an impeccable finish.

KaytrAminé is the result of the combination of the beatmaker talents of Kaytranada and the tasty rhymes of Aminé. Just in time for the summer, they offer us a record where house productions led by the bass highlight tasty verses.

The themes are not particularly clear. It is not a question here of conveying profound philosophical messages. Women are still, unfortunately, “hoes” and “bitches”. But the images proposed by Aminé are often formulated with inventiveness and ingenuity. The choruses that accompany them, full of repetitions, but so catchy, are judicious earworms.

The guests on the disc are not just extras. Freddie Gibbs, Pharrell, Big Sean, Amaarae and Snoop Dog not only bring prestige to the record, but also allow you to navigate between styles as you listen. EYE is one of the pearls of this album. Snoop Dog comes to pose a few verses on a more elementary, but irresistible production.

The disc evolves in decrescendo, with increasingly slow productions. The first piece, Who He Iz, immediately captures the attention thanks to its fast tempo. The one that follows, letstalkaboutit (with Freddie Gibbs), is most convincing. The third, 4EVA (with Pharrell Williams) is also perfect for clubs. But after some 34 minutes of listening, when the fabulous K&A ends, we have just been entitled to the best track on the record (in our humble opinion). We then completely left the dancing atmosphere for a production with more R&B samples, a rap more focused on words than on the rhythm of Aminé’s side.

Whatever genre the listener prefers, from dance floor songs to more raw rap songs, there’s something for everyone on this disc, which we’re sure to listen to again and again this summer.
