(Toronto) University professors are re-evaluating their approach to the work of Alice Munro following revelations that the Canadian writer protected her husband after learning he had sexually assaulted her daughter.
The academic community began to reconsider its ties to the Nobel laureate after her youngest daughter, Andrea Robin Skinner, published a first-person essay last weekend detailing her stepfather’s abuse and Alice Munro’s inaction.
The chair of the Department of English and Literary Studies at Western University, Ms.me Munro says she will begin looking into the issue in the coming weeks.
In an email, Jones said she is currently “dealing with the Andrea Robin Skinner story” and will consider M’s legacy later.me Munro.
She says she will bring the topic up with her students, but she doesn’t yet know what that discussion will look like.
For his part, Robert Lecker, professor of English at McGill University, says he will continue his graduate course on Mme Munro as planned next semester, while making room to discuss this new information about the writer’s life.
But the decision was not easy to make. “I feel deeply divided,” he said.
