The mass exile of the Armenians who populated the Nagorno-Karabakh region marks the end of the Republic which was self-proclaimed in 1994. Azerbaijan, which claims this territory, has regained control.
On January 1, 2024, the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh will return to the fold of Azerbaijan. At the start of the Soviet Union, in 1921, Stalin created the borders of the Soviet socialist republics, including Armenia and Azerbaijan. Nagorno-Karabakh, populated by 95% Armenians, is given to Azerbaijan.
A new offensive from Azerbaijan
In 1988, the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh demonstrated and demanded their attachment to Armenia. When the Soviet Union fell in 1991, they proclaimed the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Supported by Armenia, the separatists win the war. A ceasefire was signed in 1994. Armenia took control of the areas around the separatist enclave. In September 2020, Azerbaijan demonstrated its military superiority. Ten days ago, the country launched a new offensive, pushing tens of thousands of refugees to leave Nagorno-Karabakh.
