Gérard Collomb died of cancer on Saturday November 25. The former Minister of the Interior and ex-mayor of Lyon leaves behind a long career as a politician. Gérard Collomb was born in 1947. Associate professor of classics, he began his political career in the 1970s. In 1981, he became a deputy for Rhône. Re-elected five years later, he then had to fight against the right-wing government. He sought a first term as councilor in 1995 as mayor of the 9th arrondissement of Lyon (Rhône), before seizing the Rhone capital in 2001. He aims to make Lyon a European capital. It works since he is re-elected and even becomes a senator.
He pockets a ministry in 2017
From then on, Gérard Collomb saw his efforts rewarded. He is promoted Minister of the Interior in 2017 by Emmanuel Macron, before resigning in October 2018 due to the Benalla affair. He once again became mayor of Lyon until June 2020. He then sat as an opposition elected official at Lyon town hall. On September 16, 2022, he announced on X that he had cancer, before passing awayre saWednesday November 25, 2023.
