A confidential text message from Emmanuel Macron to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison was unveiled, reigniting the controversy over the submarine crisis between the two countries. On the set of 23 hours of Franceinfo Tuesday, November 2, the journalist Catherine Demangeat takes stock of the situation.
The Australian press revealed Tuesday, November 2 a confidential SMS that Emmanuel Macron would have sent to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison about the contract of the submarines finally canceled between the two countries. Present on the set of 23 hours of Franceinfo, the journalist Catherine Demangeat reports that “According to the entourage of the Head of State, this SMS shows on the contrary that Emmanuel Macron did not know that the Australians would denounce the contract. ‘We knew’, says the Elysee, ‘that they had questions but only on technical and calendar aspects. We did not know that they wanted to change their strategy by opting for nuclear power otherwise we would have made a proposal ‘”, she says.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries deteriorated. “It’s very cold with Australia. Emmanuel Macron, during the G20, refused all contact with the Australian Prime Minister”, announces the journalist. On the other hand, with the United States, “There is the beginning of a return to confidence. There was this meeting with Joe Biden and in this regard, the Élysée is pleased to emphasize that the American president has apologized”, underlines Catherine Demangeat.
