Retirement for Marie-Ève Dicaire?

Unless the situation changes, Quebecer Marie-Ève Dicaire should confirm that she is hanging up her boxing gloves in the coming weeks.

This is at least the option that seems most likely when the 36-year-old athlete had an appointment with promoter Yvon Michel yesterday to discuss his future.

Another meeting is scheduled with the entire Dicaire team next week.

“We have to see if she has the taste to continue or to go in another direction”, briefly commented Michel, admitting that the boxer seemed rather “ambivalent”.

If she were ever to continue her career, the plan would be to fight at least one fight before getting another shot at a world championship title.

However, does Dicaire want to find the demanding rhythm of life imposed by several training camps? The question is valid.

A pioneer

Dicaire will have fought 20 professional fights to date, signing 18 victories and contributing greatly to the development of women’s boxing in Quebec.

Having made her debut in November 2015, in a gala presented in Sorel-Tracy, Dicaire entered the ring for the last time, seven years later, on November 12, 2022 in Manchester, England. The Quebecer then lost a unification fight against British champion Natasha Jonas.

Bowing by unanimous decision of the judges, she was stripped of her IBF super-welterweight title.

Memorable evening in Quebec

It was in December 2018, at the Videotron Center in Quebec City, that Dicaire achieved her goal of becoming world champion.

The athlete from Saint-Eustache then won against Uruguayan Chris Namus. After three title defenses, Dicaire suffered her first career loss, in March 2021 in the United States, against American Claressa Shields.

She then defeated Mexican Cynthia Lozano at the Bell Center to regain the IBF crown.
