Before each game, the Canadiens hockey club, owned by the Molson group, will recognize unceded native lands in a spirit of homage and respect. How ironic on the part of an organization that has fought many legal battles to obtain a reduction in its property taxes! Worse: in a context where so many Montrealers are struggling to find housing without breaking the bank, the Molson group is investing in the construction of high-rise apartment buildings around the Bell Center for the wealthy.
If the people of Molson are really looking to restore their image, perhaps they could also apologize for these exclusive deals that the big brewers have negotiated with merchants in order to take microbreweries off the shelves. And if they really want to collect homage and respect, I suggest that they embark on a crusade against what are commonly called tax havens.
