From Thursday March 7, restaurants, canteens and kitchens across France that produce takeaway meals must indicate the provenance of the meat they use.
A gray area surrounded our plates: the origin of the meat consumed. From Thursday March 7, this lack of transparency will be punished. In Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), a caterer is preparing to change its menu. “We mixed French beef and French pork. We’ll have to clarify that”, he emphasizes. According to him, the know-how of French meat must be highlighted for customers, particularly following the angry movement of farmers.
Between 1,500 and 7,500 euros fine
These details added to the labels are well received by consumers. “I think it’s good to know what we eat, where it comes from”, underlines a woman. Restaurant owners will have to indicate the origin of the meat once it is processed. If the restaurateur does not know the precise country of origin, he can write whether or not it comes from the European Union. In the event of an infraction, professionals risk fines of between 1,500 and 7,500 euros.
