Residents of older homes are more exposed to high temperatures. Poorly insulated, these buildings can turn into real ovens. This is the case in Niort (Deux-Sèvres).

It became a habit. For the past few weeks, Luc Lorge, a resident of the Tour Chabot, in Niort (Deux-Sèvres), has been closing its shutters at 10 a.m. “The heat is starting to come into the apartment, so it’s unbearable. Sometimes I have trouble breathing”, he laments. Its neighborhood dates back to the 1960s. According to its occupants, the insulation of certain buildings has never been redone.

With 30 degrees at home, Luc Lorge spends his days in the dark. Six floors higher, the situation is identical at Martine Bonnet, but with a few more degrees. “We can’t ask for anything, do anything… They’re paper walls”, she complains. The inhabitants, exasperated, have the Deux-Sèvres Habitat social landlord in their sights. However, the public body affirms, in a press release, that all the housing has completely acceptable energy performance. He therefore returns the responsibility to his tenants, and indicates to them that it is their responsibility in particular to “Follow the national instructions to fight against high heat” and “to ventilate the accommodation very early in the morning”.
