Republican elected official accused of lies indicted by federal justice

(New York) The elected Republican George Santos, whose lies have made the headlines of the political and media world since his election in 2022, has been charged by federal justice, American media reported on Tuesday.

The exact nature of the charges is not yet known. Contacted by AFP, the Justice Department declined to comment on the information.

According to CNN, which cites three sources familiar with the matter, federal prosecutors have charged Mr. Santos and the New York elected official could appear in court on Wednesday.

George Santos, 34, who notably inflated his financial income and “embellished” his CV, admitted to having grossly lied about whole parts of his life.

The man who presented himself as a symbol of the “American dream” is also accused of having lied or of having exaggerated reality by presenting himself as “an American proud to be Jewish” – he grew up in a Catholic family, but maintains that his “heritage is Jewish” – or even as the grandson of Holocaust survivors who fled Nazi barbarism.

It is the subject of multiple investigations, in Congress, in New York and as far away as Brazil.

Asked about the possible indictment of George Santos, Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy said he would look at “the charges” before considering any expulsion from Congress.
