Reports of serious incidents in educational establishments in 2022-2023 are up slightly compared to the previous year, franceinfo learned on Friday February 23, via the annual report of the statistical services of the Ministry of National Education on reports For “serious incidents” involving students, teachers or even parents.
Heads of secondary schools in the public and private sectors under contract reported an average of 13.7 serious incidents per 1,000 students. A figure up compared to the previous year since it was then 12.3. This increase is only evident with regard to incidents occurring in middle schools because the figure is stable in high schools. In fact, in middle schools – where three quarters of reported events take place – the number increases from 13.5 to almost 16 reported incidents per 1,000 students.
Students, perpetrators of violence in two thirds of cases
Violence of all kinds (altercations, fights, insults, attacks, etc.) is also increasing in schools. In these establishments, the perpetrators are students in two thirds of cases. In a third, these are families, parents who are increasingly aggressive, whether verbally or physically, in person or on the internet. According to the report, in the first degree, the victims of violence are primarily teaching staff (52% of incidents are committed against them and 27% against students or groups of students).
If we take all educational establishments, almost half of the incidents involve verbal violence (43%) in schools, middle schools and high schools. Physical violence represents 40% of the total in schools. They are less significant in middle and high schools (24%).
Finally, another figure highlighted by the report is the fact that 8% of all serious incidents committed in middle and high schools are motivated by racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia or homophobia. A figure that doubled compared to the previous year.
