The fourth and final evening of the Democratic Party convention is being held on Thursday, August 22, in Chicago. Kamala Harris, the American vice president, must officially accept the party’s nomination for the November presidential election. On Wednesday evening, it was her running mate, Tim Walz, who was sworn in. Kamala Harris, the candidate that no one expected a month ago, and certainly not the Republican camp, which has been shaken up in its campaign. It must now fight with a younger candidate, seen by many Republican voters as more left-wing, and therefore worse, than Joe Biden.
At the foot of the towers of the business district of Tucson, Arizona, Kamala Harris does not have a particularly good press. “I think she’s crazy. She doesn’t know what to do for the country. She’s already done a lot of harm,” denounces a resident.
The Democratic candidate, who positions herself as a champion of the middle classes, has spoken in recent days of strong economic measures: building three million new homes, capping the price of insulin and taxing the rich and large companies even more.
“The Democrats’ economic plan will lead us to ruin,” believes this other Republican voter“They are ready to ruin the country for an ideal that we are not ready for. We cannot afford it.”
The race to ruin is a theme that resonates with a number of Republican voters, who resent the administration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, which has failed to prevent the biggest wave of inflation in decades.
“Now she talks about inflation, she says she’s going to reduce it, but why didn’t she do it during her term with Joe ? “, asks this woman, in the business district. “A lot of people lost their jobs, their businesses… Some people lost their homes. We had a lot more homelessness because of inflation. She did nothing to fix that.”
“If she became president, it would be the final, ultimate destruction of America. We would no longer have an America, but a socialist country.”

A program that is too far to the left, this is also the angle of attack of Donald Trump who describes Kamala Harris as “Communist”. “I wouldn’t go so far as to call her a communist, tempers this voter, but it takes on many of the things that the communists promote.”
“The idea of freezing prices is exactly what communist countries do. Stifling capitalism, stifling freedom of enterprise, that’s what communists do. They have socialist ideas. It’s frightening, we’re facing the unknown.
“If she continues what she is doing now, it is scary.”

In reality, Kamala Harris did not mention price controls, only a fight against excessive margins in large-scale distribution. But the description of communist launched by Donald Trump seems to have an impact on some minds.
