How middle and high schools support their students ? The IVAC and IVAL (college/high school added value indicators) are published on Wednesday March 20. It is a sort of rating awarded to each establishment, which values good support for students. For example, an establishment which welcomes young people from disadvantaged families but who manage to obtain good results in the certificate.

At Pierre-Sémard college, in Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis), which is part of the priority education network (REP), everything is done for the well-being and development of students outside of school hours. “On Monday, there is the football club. On Tuesday, it is the theater club. And on Thursday, it is the eloquence club”, describes the principal education advisor (CPE), who is in charge. Which suits the more than 500 students from 93 perfectly. “Sometimes, outside of college, we don’t particularly have things to do, we get bored”explains Nouaman, who describes the lack of sporting activities outside of college.

Godfathers and godmothers against microviolence

Another key word here, kindness. “From the start of the year, there were conflicts between the 6e and the 5e, microviolence. So every 6e has a level 5 godfather or godmothere. The objective is focused on living together and empathy”, adds the CPE. And good students like Kris, 17 on average, can pull others up.

“I have a friend who sometimes asks me for a little help and I try to explain as best I can, in math or in French.”

Because most of the work is of course done in class. In the different subjects, it is necessary to adapt to the needs of the students. From the best to the most difficult. “The students are grouped in threes or fours. This allows us to work more on autonomy since they can work alone in their place, observes a middle school French teacher. This is called educational differentiation. Not all students in the class are working on the same tasks at exactly the same time. In my subject, it can be a group on punctuation, a group on conjugations, depending on their needs.”

Increased patent results

In mathematics, we are trying a new approach. “The lesson at home, and the exercises and activities in class”, describes this teacher. Because very often, it is complicated for some students to work in good conditions at home. Another advantage for students : be better prepared for what comes next. “We see that our students are doing particularly well. We also support families a lot, so the students who are accepted after their 9th grade in this high school know the high school well before even having been educated there. “

And the patent results are increasing every year : 81% success rate during the last test. But this is particularly permitted by classes which do not exceed 24 students.
