The exhibition Current textile design presented at the UQAM Design Center since November 29 was the opportunity to present the international conference entitled Textiles beyond craftsmanship. The question of language inevitably arises during any event of this scale, where speakers came from France and Quebec, but also from Germany, Austria, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United States. The funding obtained did not allow us to offer simultaneous translation to allow everyone to express themselves in their mother tongue, we were forced to make difficult choices.

The participants of the two round tables comprising a majority of French speakers were invited to speak in French. However, they preferred English to communicate more easily with other participants from abroad. As for the participants from Switzerland, as this country has four official national languages (German, French, Italian and Romansh) and one of our Swiss participants was German-speaking, not speaking French. , they spoke in English.

We are very sensitive to the importance of highlighting French. All conference presentations Textiles beyond craftsmanship were recorded, and the video, which will be made available in the coming weeks on the Design Center website, will be entirely subtitled in French. All of the videos presented in the exhibition are already subtitled in French and three audio guides entirely in French are also accessible on the Design Center website.

The promotion of French is very important to us and the international influence of Quebec artists and designers will remain a priority for the Design Center.
