Replica | Public libraries: lively places accessible to all

In response to Sylvie Marchand’s letter, “The degradation of the Grande Bibliothèque”, published on June 14

In response to Sylvie Marchand’s text published on June 14, the Association of Public Libraries of Quebec (ABPQ) and National Library and Archives of Quebec (BAnQ) would like to remind you that public libraries must be living, inclusive and accessible places. to all in order to fully play their fundamental social role within our society. Public libraries offer diversified services without discrimination to meet the needs of the population in terms of information, culture, education and literacy.

Public libraries are more than just repositories of books. They are places of access to information and culture, offering spaces conducive to encounters and exchanges, which evolve in step with the needs of the population. They encourage the development of knowledge and skills, while promoting the appropriation of digital tools. Thanks to their rich and varied programming, they bring a unique dynamic to our community, creating opportunities for learning, exploration and intellectual stimulation. The effervescence of the place, whether linked to exchanges, meetings, children’s laughter or intellectual ferment, will always be welcome.

Inclusive spaces accessible to all

One of the remarkable aspects of public libraries is their inclusiveness and accessibility. As free places, they allow everyone to access cultural and educational resources.

The abolition of late fees, adopted by nearly 60% of Quebec municipalities, is tangible proof of the commitment to remove the financial barriers that could hinder access to the treasures held by libraries.

In addition, by offering extended hours, these institutions ensure that all individuals, regardless of their time constraints, can fully benefit from their services, whether they are available during the day, evening or on weekends.

Public libraries are more than just institutions. They are fundamental pillars of our society, actively participating in its cultural, community, social and economic development. Their ability to provide access to information and culture, their commitment to social inclusion, their openness to all without discrimination, as well as their support for citizens at all stages of their lives, bear witness to their vital importance. Let us preserve and support these precious institutions, so that they continue to thrive and provide a living, inspiring and beneficial environment for all who make up our society.
