From her years of musical training at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Lulu Gainsbourg retains this musical requirement, the very one that consists of clearing up, trying, trying things, refining arrangements, composing differently. Replay, therefore, again and again … replay the diagram of his automatisms, redistribute the cards of his own skills to disperse them, burst them, let them get lost. And thus create his own universe.
Obviously, being yourself, standing out for what you are, is a particularly important artistic act for someone who bears a legendary name. “Replay” could be heard like reading a book or watching a movie. But then … a concept album, you might say? Why not, but not exactly, rather a love story in 14 chapters, sometimes sung, sometimes whispered in a voice that wants to be as sweet as it is sepulchral.
While writing the texts, Lilou, who shares Lulu’s life, knew how to put ideas and sensations on paper, white pages ultimately blackened with emotions, which quickly became the narration of these abundant compositions. It is in these circumstances that the heady tracks of this album were born, which benefited from a maturation, from a patient creative process where the music was composed before the texts, which form a story carried by a soundtrack to eminently cinematographic outlines.
The lyrics and the atmosphere, both disturbing and melancholy, envelop the listener, take him by surprise and never let go from beginning to end.
