The level of students in French and maths continues to plummet. Gabriel Attal, Minister of National Education, could confirm the return of grade repetition, which has fallen sharply in recent years.
Like the penholder, he had almost disappeared from the school. Repetition had long been considered an essential educational tool. In 1960, one student in two repeated at least once during their schooling. Therefore, this solution was a solution against failure. This measure made many students tremble. “I think it wasn’t very good to repeat a year in the 1970s, we were especially afraid of losing our friends”says a lady.
Repetition has decreased enormously over the years
While the repetition rate reached 50% in the 1960s, it has declined considerably over the years. This figure had fallen to 30% in the 1990s. Twenty years later, the number of students having repeated a year fell again to reach 22%. In 2022, 2% of students were affected by this measure. This tool could make its return next September.
