Repeated votes from the Conservatives | Sleepless night in the Commons

(Ottawa) The Conservatives made good on their threat. They have paralyzed the work of the House of Commons since Thursday evening with more than a hundred votes on the Trudeau government’s spending. These votes took place throughout the night and will continue on Friday.

At the time of writing, 77 of 135 votes had been cast. The Conservatives are thus blocking the bill which makes it possible to implement the measures contained in the economic update.

This maneuver follows the tabling of nearly 20,000 amendments on Wednesday as the study of Bill C-50 on just transition began in the Standing Committee on Natural Resources. The legislation aims to protect the energy sector workforce in the transition to a green economy.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre promised Wednesday to “ruin Trudeau’s Christmas until he abolishes the carbon tax.” They are calling for an exemption for farmers, First Nations and families.

“No one should have to vote during the clock. No one should have to endure this kind of harassment and relentlessness from the Leader of the Opposition,” the chief government whip, Steven MacKinnon, denounced the day before.

Further details will follow.
