Autumn may not be the biggest season for releases in the world of video games, but some nice surprises await us for the start of the school year. Classics, reimaginings and new: there’s plenty to eat until the holiday season’s blockbusters arrive.
Classics
After the opuses Black Ops Cold War (2020) and Vanguard (2021) lukewarmly received by the public, the franchise call of duty hope to come back strong this year with Modern Warfare IIa direct sequel to the hugely popular Modern Warfare of 2019, which is scheduled to release on October 28 on all platforms. According to Infinity Ward and Activision, call of duty: Modern Warfare IIwill open a “new era of the franchise”, with new mechanics and new game modes. Rumor has it that Warzone 2its counterpart battle royale free, see the light of day just a few weeks later, in November.
Hockey fans can get their hands on NHL23October 14. The new edition of the franchise from EA Sports does not promise any fabulous additions, except for some new animations and the (limited) possibility of breaking the wall of platforms between Xbox and PlayStation. Without competition, does it really need to reinvent itself? To ask the question, is to answer it. Speaking of exclusivity, EA Sports will lose the one it had on the FIFA brand with FIFA 23, which is to be released on September 27, after thirty years of marriage. Will we be entitled to a wind of renewal on soccer games soon? To be continued.
After the god of war of 2018, in which the god of war had to face celestial enemies and the… fatherhood, we await the new God of War: Ragnarokon November 9 on PlayStation 4 and 5. The Norse saga of Kratos and his son, Atreus, should conclude there, with always new ways to fight the divine and a greater emphasis on customization.
Reinventions
Six years after the release ofOverwatchthe first-person shooter promises, with Overwatch 2, a new philosophy: free, free, free. Three new heroes and six new arenas are planned for the first season of this new service game, which should be updated regularly… And we promise more than thirty cosmetic items which will be paid for. Will Blizzard win its bet? We will find out on October 4, on all platforms.
Speaking of game service, the first-person action game Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, which is scheduled for release on PC and Xbox Series X & S on November 30, promises a plot that will evolve from week to week following a meta-narrative. The followers of Warhammer: Vermintide 2 won’t be too confused, since darktide will use a similar formula where four players cooperate to defeat waves of enemies in high-octane sequences. But this time, rather than offering pre-established characters, we can customize our class, our appearance and our gender.
On the Japanese side, we expect the new action RPG from Square Enix on September 29 Valkyrie Elysium. Inspired by Norse mythology with an animated twist, this single-player MMORPG reimagining of the saga Valkyrie Profile by the studio Soleil (Ninjala) will be available on PlayStation and PC.
New
Those who crave chills down their spine will definitely get The Callisto Protocolon their radar. The action-horror game directed by Glen Schofield, which we know thanks to the excellent series dead space, takes place in 2320 in a penal colony located on Callisto, a moon of Jupiter. You’ll play as a prisoner stuck in the middle of an alien invasion that seems to have been orchestrated by the prison warden. Schofield said he tried “to make the scariest game on platforms next gen “. We will be able to judge for ourselves on all platforms on December 2.
After a development cycle of almost ten years and multiple changes of direction and scope, we will finally be able, on November 8th on all platforms, to put yourself in the shoes of a pirate captain in Skulls and Bonesan action-adventure game from Ubisoft that is inspired by the naval battles ofAssassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Buccaneer buccaneers can roam the disputed waters of the Indian Ocean in a single-player or player-versus-player campaign.
