80th anniversary of the Landing: rental prices soar in Normandy
(France 2)
The 80th anniversary of the Allied landings is eagerly awaited on the beaches of Normandy. More than six million visitors are expected. It’s already an obstacle course to find accommodation, which drives up prices.
Friday March 15, on the legendary D-Day beaches, Normandy is preparing, like every year, to honor its heroes. Facing the beach of Arromanches (Calvados), Emmanuel Durand, hotelier, is already imagining the party. “There are going to be a lot of collectors and the whole beach is going to be filled with military vehicles”, he believes. For this week commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the demand for housing is exploding. The manager indicates that he has increased his prices by 20%. You have to count 50 euros more per room per night for the occasion. The hotel has been full for several months.
2024, a record year?
According to the regional tourism committee, 95% of accommodation is already reserved. This is why prices are soaring. Housing thus sees its price multiplied by ten. Several million vacationers are expected in Normandy for the commemorations. 2024 could well be a record year in terms of attendance.
