The alliance formed with Nissan and Mitsubishi promises several new vehicle models by 2030. However, there is strong competition from Tesla and Volkswagen.
Several dozen new models, 23 billion euros and eight years to make the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance a champion of electric cars in Europe. With an automotive sector weakened by the Covid-19 pandemic, the alliance wants to boost its sales and gradually turn its back on the gasoline engine. Thus, 35 new 100% electric vehicles must be launched by 2030. To create as many models in such a short time, each manufacturer will have to share its know-how and technologies with another.
Five common platforms will be created for this. “It’s sort of the skeleton body of a vehicle from which you can create the whole car. The important thing is to be on common platforms, but also to have the least amount of differentiation possible to reduce costs”, explained Jean-Dominique Sénart, CEO of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. But competition is fierce with Volkswagen and Tesla gaining ground in Europe.
