“For Armenia, this is excellent news”, greeted Tuesday October 3 on franceinfo Anne Genetet, Renaissance deputy for French people established outside France, secretary of the National Defense and Armed Forces Commission of the National Assembly, while the Armenian Parliament ratified the country’s accession at the International Criminal Court (ICC). Russia immediately condemned a decision “wrong”.

The deputy “pleased that Prime Minister Pashinian is turning much more towards the West, towards the Americans” by ratifying the Rome Statute “allowing Armenia to be a party to the International Criminal Court. This is excellent news which, I know, angers the Russians.”

Anne Genetet asks herself the question of the threat that could weigh on the integrity of Armenia. “On a strictly geographical level, this is a difficult question”, recognizes the chosen one. She recalls that in 2020, “Azerbaijan conquered Armenian lands around Nagorno-Karabakh” and that Azerbaijan “took up positions in Armenian territory, above the Lachin corridor in particular. And that is a violation of Armenia’s territorial sovereignty.”

Russia’s ‘dark game’

Anne Genetet adds that in the south of Armenia, there is Nakhitchevan, an exclave of Azerbaijan, “for which Azerbaijan has been looking for a long time to try to have this territorial continuity”. But “Armenia wants to maintain its contact and its territorial continuity, and in particular its communication with Iran”. The secretary of the National Defense and Armed Forces Commission of the National Assembly here denounces the “obscure game” of Russia which “had to pose as a force which would ensure peace in the region”. But Moscow “does not ensure the security of Armenians”.

“Armenia must live, insists Anne Genetet. France has always supported Armenia. She always did. It will continue to do so to allow Armenians to live in Armenia in peace, in a sovereign manner.”
