First real test and first success for Remco Evenepoel. The young climber from the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team won his first grand tour on Sunday, September 11 by winning the Vuelta 2022. The Belgian, who has been wearing the leader’s jersey since the 6th stage, passed all the tests in mountain and put an end to the hegemony of Primoz Roglic, who gave up following his fall during the 16th stage, and who had reigned for three years in the Tour of Spain. In the end Evenepoel beat two Spaniards, Enric Mas (Movistar) and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates).
This is the first crowning of a Belgian rider on a grand tour for 44 years. At 22, the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl prodigy thus confirms the promise of a career that promises to be dazzling. Those of Alejandro Valverde and Vincenzo Nibali, two legends of the peloton, ended on the last stage of this Tour of Spain.
The last route, without difficulty between Las Rozas and Madrid, also logically crowned a sprinter for the last time. At the end of a stormy home stretch, it was finally Juan Molano (Team UAE Emirates) who won ahead of the green jersey, Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), and his teammate Pascal Ackermann.
