Remains of ancient Indigenous cemetery found in Toronto

(Toronto) The City of Toronto said one of its construction crews discovered “ancient” human remains in an Indigenous cemetery on Friday.

The crew working on a water main on Withrow Avenue in the city’s east end contacted Toronto police after finding the remains.

Toronto police said an anthropologist assessed the scene and discovered the remains came from a marked Indigenous cemetery in the area.

Police say they remained on site to preserve the area and the remains, while awaiting further instructions from the anthropologist.

The City indicates that work is suspended while the investigation is underway.

Toronto is on the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississauga of the Credit, Anishnabeg, Chippewa, Haudenosaunee and Wendat.
